Kettering Chiropractic and Cervicogenic Headache

Kettering Chiropractic and Cervicogenic Headache

We see a large number of people with headaches in our Kettering office, and Dr. Poelking has been able to provide relief for many of them. Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that half of all adults struggle with some manner of headache condition, so this really isn’t unexpected. One of the most frequent types of headaches which our patients endure is cervicogenic headache which, fortunately, chiropractic can commonly help.

What is a Cervicogenic Headache?

A cervicogenic headache is one that stems from a problem in the cervical spine. It could be as a result of an issue with either the spine itself (particularly, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it might be attributed to a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This problem in your spine brings about compression or aggravation of the spinal nerves, which can generate headache pain.

How do you distinguish if the headache you are struggling with is a cervicogenic headache? Other than receiving a diagnosis from a healthcare expert, a frequent symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or pain in your neck. This is sometimes accompanied by pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.

How Chiropractic Helps

Since cervicogenic headaches will not go away until whatever problem is causing them is corrected, it is essential to receive treatment rather than just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an effective solution, and one that offers a great deal of relief.

In one study released in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, experts followed 80 people who had regular cervicogenic headaches. Fifty percent got chiropractic care and the other half engaged in light massage therapy. Each participant was examined 12 and 24 weeks after the treatment and it was found that chiropractic provided the best effects.

In particular, this study uncovered that chiropractic adjustments gave patients greater pain relief and lowered the frequency of headaches that occurred. What's more, it also mitigated the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.
