Why You Should Avoid Drugs for Back Pain

Kettering chiropractic back pain treatmentChiropractic is centered on the concept of helping your body to naturally heal through spinal adjustments and lifestyle changes that promote wellness. For Dr. Poelking, this means working to restore your body's normal functioning to prevent the need for drugs or surgery. We find that most of our Kettering patients are relieved to find a natural solution for their health issues.

One benefit of chiropractic care is that it helps people minimize or even eliminate the use of drug treatments. Prescription medications are commonly supplied to people who have back problems. This is such a significant crisis that the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) issued a press release stating that opioid (painkiller) dangers overshadow the advantages when prescribed for back pain.

Some of the most well-known opiates, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, include hydrocodone (Vicodin), oxycodone (OxyContin and Percocet), morphine, and codeine. Figures provided by the AAN mention the fact that about 50% of the people taking these types of substances for a period of three months are still taking them five years later. This can further complicate the difficulty of back pain and recovery, particularly if an narcotic addiction occurs.

Compare that to chiropractic care which incorporates natural healing and the advantages are evident. While a drug might be useful at briefly suppressing the symptoms of a health problem, it's not a long-term solution to the problem. Drugs can't fix your injured back; it will only mask the pain.

Dr. Poelking will first examine you to get to the source of your back pain and then work with you to solve the problem -- without risky medications.

If you're ready for pain relief, naturally, give our Kettering office a call at (937) 299-2900 to make an appointment with Dr. Poelking.
